We often tend to think of a designer's job as imagining the most elegant, trendy aesthetic for a product from a blank sheet of paper.
However, the designer is not an artist, since he or she works for a product whose functions and manufacture have been clearly identified by other, very Cartesian players.
It's important to understand how the designer works, as this has a direct influence on product design. There are five main phases in a design study:

Once the specifications have been taken into account, the designer needs to find out as much as possible about the product's history, immerse himself in the company's culture, and know as much as possible about existing and past products...
