 INTRODUCTION

The decline in non-renewable fossil fuels and the sharp rise in the price of a barrel of oil have prompted the development of a new generation of more environmentally-friendly materials: biopolymers and biodegradable polymers. These materials can be classified according to two main criteria: their renewable origin and/or their biodegradability. The challenge in communicating about these materials is to make the best possible distinction between origin and end-of-life aspects (from renewable and compostable resources), which are currently too often misinterpreted. Manufacturers wishing to incorporate this type of material must take into account a global approach, which we will attempt to establish in this fact sheet.
