4. Understand the main risks when implementing changes

Successful change management depends on stakeholder commitment. The main pitfalls are discussed below.

  • Lack of time does not allow stakeholders to get as involved as they should.

  • Stakeholders may not understand the benefits of change, and may not apply themselves. However, this lack of involvement may also have other causes. At its most extreme, this lack of interest and involvement can translate into passive or active resistance to the planned change.

  • Stakeholders may get involved, but be left too much to their own devices. A change will be defined and implemented, but it will not fully achieve the objectives that had been set.

  • Changes are implemented superficially, by only some of the stakeholders, or quickly abandoned and returned to the...
