2. Don't underestimate the disadvantages of a project-based structure
It is complex to implement for the employee who receives his instructions from the project manager, and who generally depends hierarchically on his department head.
Compared with other structures, the difference lies in the particular problem of coordination posed by projects, to which conventional integration mechanisms are ill-suited, and which therefore requires a different kind of integrator: the project manager.
The role of the project manager is essential to the success of this type of structure.
He/she must coordinate the collaborators and their activities until the project is successfully completed, without always having hierarchical responsibility for everyone.
In a hierarchical structure (functional or divisional), arbitration is the normal way of resolving conflicts.
