1. What is a complex system? What are its properties?

A system is an ancient abstract notion (ancient Greece) that is very useful today for creating and designing future products, services, organizations or a composition of these elements.

Definition

A system is characterized by a set of components (technological hardware, software, human operators, materials, procedures, services); the components interact strongly, and flow material, energy and information in a given environment or context. This assembly satisfies needs and expectations; it accomplishes a mission with prescribed objectives, enabling it to achieve or respond to a purpose.
