5. What kind of organization should be put in place to engineer a complex system requiring different professions and multiple academic disciplines?
Multi-disciplinary team: no single engineer possesses all the knowledge and practices of every profession involved in the design of such systems. The engineering of complex systems is carried out by a multidisciplinary team. Each development specialty (such as environment, architecture, safety, ergonomics, trades...) and each life-cycle specialty (such as use, testing, production, deployment, after-sales, maintenance, retirement...) is assumed by one or more team members. Within this team, the role of the systems engineer(s) is to :
bring together the different viewpoints of specialists ;
generate the necessary and sufficient actions to evaluate options and alternatives;
resolve technical conflicts by making choices based on multiple criteria and justifying these choices;...
