3.1 Full or simplified life cycle assessment (ISO 14040 and 14044 series)

Life cycle assessment (LCA) is currently the most comprehensive and robust approach to environmental assessment of systems, whether they be products, services, or processes.

LCA is an iterative, multi-criteria, systemic, and comprehensive assessment methodology. Based on mass and energy balances throughout the entire life cycle, this approach provides a detailed map of the material flows passing through a system. This assessment standardizes its results in relation to the performance of the system's function. This is known as the functional unit.
