4.1 Think in product lines
It is illusory to imagine that a single product can suit everyone, whatever their abilities. Universal design also means dividing a product into ranges to suit varying needs, at reduced cost. A range is made up of several products designed from a common platform, according to a modular design principle. Reusing modules (sub-assemblies of the product architecture) increases combined production volumes while reducing individual costs. It also respects the criterion of social acceptability, since all the elements of the range use the same formal and aesthetic codes, and have a coherent identity between them.
