3. Properties of ophthalmic forms
Ophthalmic forms have to meet a number of requirements, some of which are quite similar to those for injectable preparations. They can be grouped into three main categories: sterility, tolerance and physicochemical stability.
3.1 Sterility
The surface of the eye is contaminated by a number of micro-organisms. Bacterial composition is influenced by the flora of the skin adjacent to the eye and by the hygiene of the surrounding environment. However, the number and variety of germs present are reduced by the eye's various defense mechanisms. The eyelids and their blinking, as well as certain substances dissolved in the tear fluid, are involved in these mechanisms.
