7. Semi-solid preparations
Semi-solid preparations are ointments, creams (thickened emulsions) or sterile gels designed to be applied to the conjunctiva by insertion into the conjunctival cul-de-sac. They are spread naturally by blinking the eyelids. These preparations deliver a more prolonged effect than eye drops, by increasing the residence time in the cornea (figure 5 ).
