8. Inserts

Inserts are sterile solid or semi-solid preparations designed to release the active substance for a specific period of time. Compared with traditional ophthalmic forms, they offer a number of advantages:

  • increased ocular residence time ;

  • controlled release of active ingredient over time;

  • solid form for improved physico-chemical and bacteriological stability;

  • reduced systemic absorption ;

  • absence of antimicrobial preservatives.

However, they have the disadvantage of being poorly accepted by patients, due to the discomfort caused by the presence of a solid foreign body in the conjunctival cul-de-sac. In addition, application is not always easy and may require a delivery device....
