    Overview

    ABSTRACT

The revival of the urban tramway has fuelled a large number of studies regarding its new developments. Railway equipment manufacturers have set out on this task and are competing on innovation and technical solutions respecting urban life constraints. As an example, certain current models are equipped with an integral low floor in order to facilitate access to disabled people. A new mode of transportation called the tram-train has the capacity to transfer from the urban to the railway network thus connecting small agglomerations from centre to centre. This compatibility must not only integrate technical aspects but also driving visibility and front end reinforcement.

     INTRODUCTION

The last part of this study is entirely devoted to rolling stock developments brought to market by the growing participation of European railway equipment manufacturers.

The collapse of the former Soviet empire saw the emergence of several manufacturers who, either on the basis of their own developments or thanks to alliances with a Western European manufacturer, are present on the market with products that very often stand up to comparison with traditional European manufacturers.
