4. Application

Let's conclude this article with an example illustrating the application of PIXE to an aerosol research study. The aim was to find out how elemental concentrations in an ambient aerosol depend on atmospheric conditions at a given time. One of the tasks was the following experiment, carried out on September 7 and 8, 1993 in Prague.

4.1 Sampling

The sampling point was north of the city center, approximately 200 m from the Vltava river and 200 m from a busy street, out of sight of both. It was in the non-industrial vicinity of the university, family homes and a hospital. Sampling was carried out on weekdays at the very beginning of the warm season.
