1. Principle of the Auger effect

1.1 Mechanism

The mechanism of the Auger effect concerns all bodies, whatever their state - solid, liquid or gaseous (except H and He), and can be caused by any type of incident particle - ion, electron, positron or X-ray photon - as long as the energy of the particle is sufficient to tear off an atomic electron.
