6. Conclusion

In a mass spectrometer, the analyzer is the part that links the m/z ratio of an ion to its operating parameters. Its physical characteristics must be considered in any organic mass spectrometry experiment, as they determine the quality of the recorded mass spectrum in terms of resolution and measurement accuracy. Detection sensitivity and selectivity, as well as measurement dynamics and speed, are also closely linked to analyzer performance. With technical improvements in instrumental parameters such as resolution, mass measurement accuracy or m/z ratio scanning speed, mass spectrometry is currently tending to broaden its scope of application towards the global analysis of complex (usually biological) samples.
