6. Conclusion

The performance of CPS is well established, particularly in terms of separation kinetics. Since its development in the 1990s, it has benefited, and continues to benefit, from the technological advances made in liquid chromatography and chromatographic columns to achieve the same level of reliability. It is now commercially available from several major instrumentation companies, confirming its appeal in the separative sciences. The conditions are therefore ripe for further development of its use outside its preferred field, enantiomer separations, and in a few niche markets (lipids, petroleum products and derivatives, etc.). The fact that carbon dioxide is considered a "green" solvent for this application may also come into play, as may its cost compared with conventional LC solvents; these points remained very secondary at the start of SPC development.
