1. Noisy signal processing
1.1 Context
Here, a signal represents a phenomenon dependent on time and/or other variables, and carrying information of interest to the observer. The problems encountered in designing a processing system are centered on this information: it must be represented, conveyed, protected, at least partially recovered, interpreted... The term signal is taken in a restricted sense (it represents "interesting" information) as opposed to noise (the latter is harmful to interesting information). This interesting information, of which the signal is the medium, is to be distinguished from "usable" information on the problem: the latter is used to develop processing.
