1. Centrifugation principles

1.1 Sedimentation and centrifugation

Separation of liquid mixtures is based on their density difference, exploiting terrestrial or centrifugal acceleration. This is only possible if the mixture is in suspension and not in solution. Components of higher density settle to the bottom of the basin or to the periphery of the rotating bowl.

A high sedimentation rate is crucial to the speed and efficiency of the process.
