5. Conclusion and outlook

From a scientific point of view, fundamental research into food irradiation is no longer required; all that remains are research and development studies to adapt the process, particularly to certain Third World countries. In developed countries, the problem is essentially socio-cultural (which, incidentally, is practically non-existent for drugs), and concerns distribution channels, with the "fear of consumer reaction".

It should also be noted that the European directive, although passed by Parliament, has not yet been applied, as the positive list, which was to have been drawn up by the end of 2001 by the European Medicines Agency, has still not been established.

To date, this list contains only one food category: dried aromatic herbs, spices and vegetable condiments.
