4.1 Nutritional values and risks associated with excessive sugar consumption

Sucrose has a high energy value: 1 g of carbohydrate generates 4 kcal or 16.7 kJ. Consequently, a 5.9 g lump of sugar n° 4 will produce 23.6 kJ or 98.64 kJ. According to ANSES (Agence nationale de sécurité sanitaire de l'alimentation, de l'environnement et du travail), we advise against exceeding the limit of 100 g/day of free sugars (excluding lactose and galactose).

WHO (World Health Organization) recommendations are even stricter, with a limit for free sugars set at less than 10% of total energy intake, i.e. 50 g/day for an energy intake of 2,203 kcal/day.
