We can consider three types of propellant for aerosol cans (if we disregard pump systems whose energy is supplied by the user's fingers): liquefied propellants (butane, CFC), which are prohibited for contact with food products, and insoluble and soluble gaseous propellants. We will only discuss the latter two.

6.1 Insoluble gaseous propellants

In this case, the propellant only serves to provide the pressure needed to force the liquid product out of the housing.

Depending on the nature of the product to be dispensed (liquid or powder form), an appropriately shaped nozzle is used. Nitrogen, air and argon are insoluble gaseous propellants.
