8. Mistakes to avoid

8.1 Don't confuse SIL studies with MMRI life data sheets

To justify a SIL level for safety instrumented functions (SIF), some manufacturers carry out SIL studies, the aim of which is to define the required SIL of the SIF and to justify by calculation that the required SIL level has been achieved. A study justifying the SIL level alone is insufficient to meet the requirements set out in articles 7 and 8 of arrêté du 4 octobre 2010 . In life-cycle data sheets, the SIL (or NC) level is only one of the elements to be justified.
