4. How to assess the probability of ignition

4.1 Two approaches

To assess the probability of ignition, two approaches coexist:

  • quantification using databases ;

  • quantification using mathematical models.

Quantification by database has the advantage of being relatively straightforward, since all you need to do is refer to tabulated values. Depending on the database, values may vary according to :

  • product sensitivity ;

  • leakage rate ;

  • the density of ignition sources in the environment where the flammable mixture is dispersed.
