 INTRODUCTION

Oxidation-reduction phenomena are involved in all areas of water treatment technology. Their general principles were outlined in a first article (Oxidation and reduction applied to water treatment – General principles). A second article (Oxidation and reduction applied to water treatment – Oxygen, chlorine and derivatives) was devoted to the most traditional oxidants.

This article examines :

  • other oxidants (including ozone);

  • advanced" oxidation processes, combining ozone and/or hydrogen peroxide and/or UV rays and/or catalysts... ;

  • reducers, commonly used but more limited than oxidizers.

The main applications and implementation methods of oxidation-reduction in water technologies will be developed in a final article in conjunction with the articles in the Environment section:

  • Water treatment before use. Dissolved substances [G 1 171] ;

  • Water treatment before use. Channel and applications [G 1 172] ;

  • Physico-chemical treatment of soluble pollution [G 1 271] ;

  • Tertiary treatment of industrial effluents [G 1 310] ;

  • Water pollution control. High-performance finishes [G 1 330] .
