3. Specificity of terahertz radiation

Advances in semiconductor technology are such that laboratories are now able to manufacture real miniature lasers dedicated to the so-called "terahertz" domain (figure 10 : electromagnetic spectrum where the terahertz gap between microwaves and the optical domain is found). It operates at room temperature, with very low manufacturing costs. This dazzling leap forward has applications in medicine, computing, chemistry, astronomy and meteorology, not to mention defense and military organizations. In medicine, chemistry and all fields where it is important to preserve intact matter and living organisms, T-rays are of great interest for the non-contact, fine characterization of the components of solid materials, liquid solutions and even gases.
