Homogeneous layer
A layer consisting of a single material.
Nanolaminate
An assembly of alternating layers composed of several different materials, typically less than 100 nm thick. This definition applies to inorganic/inorganic stacks and organic/inorganic stacks.
Percolation; Percolation
The formation of a continuous path through a material that allows a species to be transported from one side to the other when the defect density exceeds a critical threshold.
Permeant; Permeant
A gaseous or liquid species capable of diffusing through a material.
Free volume; Free volume
The space between polymer chains that is not occupied by polymer molecules.
