2. Sizing the charging infrastructure

Sizing involves translating the needs analysis into a technical architecture. The goal is to install the right amount of power in the right place, while anticipating future growth in the electric vehicle fleet.

2.1 Technology choices: alternating current (AC) versus direct current (DC)

Figure 1 shows the charging architecture, which is based on two distinct technologies. The AC charging station transmits power from the grid directly to the vehicle. The car’s onboard charger converts this alternating current into direct current for the battery. This technology is cost-effective to purchase and install. It is ideal for extended parking (7.4 kW to 22 kW charging stations).
