3. Laminating units: limitations and remedies

3.1 Introduction

Here, we describe how to adapt a screw-roller assembly, known as a plasticizing unit, to the requirements of microplasturgy.

The plasticizing unit, consisting of an Archimedean screw of evolving geometry in a sheath, has a triple role:

  • allow polymer to be fed and transported in the solid state;

  • melt the polymer in the melting or plasticizing zone;

  • force the polymer through the tooling into the pumping zone.
