Overview

ABSTRACT

This article deals with molds for polymer injection molding. It describes the main types of molds, their principles and how to choose the number of cavities and the injection pins. The injection cycle, when tackled from the cavity. Standpoint enables us to understand and resolve the most common defects in injected parts. The optimization of cavities to minimize the injection cycle time is then described, with or without links to numerical calculation techniques. The general design of the mold and its casing are described, in connection with normative aspects and normative communication with moldmakers.

 INTRODUCTION

Plastic injection molding involves filling the cold cavities of a mold with molten plastic, then demolding the resulting part once the plastic has cooled and solidified.

The mould cavities are filled by introducing molten plastic material under pressure into the mould cavities.

The temperature of the cavities is regulated to a value that cools the injected material.

The injection-molded parts, formed by the plastic material solidified in the cavities, are extracted from the mold by means of a mold opening and an ejection device.

The cost price of injected parts is closely linked to the hourly cost of the mold, cycle time and part quality. Hourly cost and cycle time depend on the technical choices made when designing the mold. On the other hand, many part defects can be avoided as early as the mold cavity design stage.
