Overview

ABSTRACT

While combining the sol-gel process and the physical-chemistry of complex fluids, Integrative Chemistry allows to conceive monolithic oxide ceramics bearing an open porosity. These catalysts labelled hereafter as MUB, acronym for “Matériaux de l’Université de Bordeaux”, are bearing an open hierarchical porosity where both mass and photonic transports are optimized when compared with traditional mico-mesoporous materials. In this paper, their efficiencies are depicted over environmental-based remediation focus, either in liquid or gaseous phases. Finally, advantages of these new heterogeneous catalysts are listed along with perspectives to optimize their synthetic scheme based on technology.

 INTRODUCTION

It is not the purpose of this article to reformulate the fundamentals of so-called "heterogeneous" contact catalysis, nor to revisit the associated kinetic equations and other formalisms of wettability, adsorption and desorption at interfaces. These kinetic arguments are already adequately and exhaustively covered elsewhere, and numerous books are dedicated to them in Techniques de l'Ingénieur [J 1 180][J 1 182][J 1 250][J 1 255][J 1 265] . Here, we shall be rather descriptive, but we hope relevant, and begin by taking the example of the silicic exoskeleton of diatoms as a metaphor for "modern, efficient catalysts". After this introduction, by extrapolation of a bio-inspired approach
