1. Calculation Assumptions

The Chicago-based Taylor Forge Company developed the so-called “Taylor Forge” method in the 1930s, which was subsequently adopted in the 1950s in design codes for circular bolted flanges, such as ASME in the United States, BS 550 in Great Britain, and CODAP in France. In the 1980s, a more precise but more complex-to-implement German standard, known as TGL 32903, was developed. It forms the basis of the new European design standard EN 1591-1 and EN 1591-2 published in 2001.
