3. Conclusion

Timing belts are sometimes regarded as the fuses of transmissions, often due to a lack of understanding of their behavior.

The reluctance to use toothed belts is now being replaced by chain drives (roller or "silent"). However, the use of elastomers or synthetic products is becoming more and more widespread. Even if there are a large number of influencing parameters, the possibilities for controlling behavior are reaching the same level of quality as those classically used with metallic materials. This means that the qualities of toothed belt drives can once again be put forward as :

  • compact architecture;

  • lack of lubrication ;

  • the ability to transmit power to several axes (within reason);

  • internal amortization capacity...
