2. Element characterization

Timing belt drives are naturally subject to standardization. . Not all characterizations are codified, however, and depend very much on the type of subsequent use.

2.1 Belt geometry and mass

The length of the belt, and consequently the pitch p b , can be obtained in various ways, the simplest being to unwind the belt without any longitudinal tension and measure the length directly over a sufficient number of pitches, using suitable means to ensure accuracy. The standardized method (NF ISO 9010) recommends measuring the centre-to-centre distance obtained with a belt mounted on two master pulleys applying low tension, and deducing the length on the assumption that the free strands are straight-line...
