Overview

ABSTRACT

Under load, joints made by welding or brazing of metal materials are likely to generate a notable disturbance in the isostatic lines through the geometry of the ties made. This article provides a methodology of approach to calculate the dimensions of joints subjected to static loading, in a state of ductility. This presentation, which particularly concerns steels and aluminum alloys, and which largely calls on the normative documents produced in the field of metal structures, endeavors to be complete, explanatory and up to date.

 INTRODUCTION

This article is a logical sequel to the "Elastic behavior" article [BM 5186] , as well as to the "Design of elementary assemblies" article [BM 5189] and the "Design and static dimensioning of welded components" article [BM 5192] , in which the author endeavored to show that, even in the best of circumstances, welded assemblies give rise to a noticeable disturbance of isostatic lines across the connections they make.

In the following lines, we discuss the design of brazed and fusion-welded joints, under static loads and in ductile condition, in principle the elementary stage in the design of a joint. The verification of brittle fracture toughness, a second step reserved for structures made of non-austenitic steels, is covered in the "Weldability of materials" article [BM 5187] . A final and optional step is the dimensioning of welded connections subject to load variability, developed in the article [BM 5191] .

It should be noted that the article is in no way a substitute for a dimensioning code; its main objective is to provide a methodology for stress analysis and an explanation of the evolution of the formulations proposed from the past to the present day, mainly in the fields of mechanical and steel construction. The article is largely based on the constituent documents of the Eurocode, which deals with the dimensioning of...
