6. CAD and digital simulation

6.1 The benefits of digital approaches

Designing and fine-tuning a deep-drawn part and the corresponding stamping tool involves a great deal of drawing and geometric definition work, for which the assistance of drawing software is particularly well suited. This facilitates tool balancing, undercut searching and blankholder surface construction, and greatly reduces the corresponding design times.

In addition to CAD (Computer Aided Design), digital simulation of stamping has many advantages:

  • by replacing physical experiments with numerical tests, it can be used at a very early stage in the design process, helping to select the part geometries best suited to deep-drawing, thereby reducing development times and saving...
