1. Basic milling principles

1.1 Three typical operations

Regardless of the type of milling cutter chosen, the milling operation will basically involve one or a combination of the following three methods. In view of the choice of methods available for milling, it is important to distinguish between the different feed directions in relation to the tool's axis of rotation (figure 1 ). In this figure, (A) corresponds to the axial direction, (B) to the radial direction and (C) to the tangential direction.
