3. Tiller geometry

3.1 Number of teeth and pitch

Milling cutters are multi-edged tools with a variable number of teeth (z ) (figure 14 ), determined for each type of operation by various factors. The material and dimensions of the workpiece, stability, surface finish and available power are factors more specifically related to the machine and machining method, while those dependent on the tool include sufficient feed per tooth (with an average chip thickness of at least 0.1 mm), a minimum of two simultaneously engaged edges and good chip evacuation capacity.
