NC is a technique that uses data composed of alphanumeric codes to represent the geometric and technological instructions required to operate a machine or process.

It is also a method of automating machine functions, the main characteristic of which is that it is highly adaptable to different jobs. In this respect, NC is one of the best examples of the penetration of information processing into production activities.

Exploiting the full potential of micro-computing, all data is processed in real time, i.e. as it is generated, so that the results of processing also help to steer the process.

After the first generation of wired logic NCs came computer numerical controls (CNCs), which incorporate one or more specific computers to perform all or part of the control functions.
