Traditional packaging: packaging that protects the food by acting as a barrier to the outside world.
Active packaging: packaging with active functions beyond passive inert containment and product protection, thanks to incorporated constituents which release or absorb substances into the packaged foodstuffs or their environment.
Intelligent packaging: packaging fitted with sensors and indicators to control food packaging and provide information on food quality during transport and storage.
