Radio frequency identification (RFID) involves the use of tags, which can be either passive or active, to transmit the data required for product traceability (e.g. food products). Unlike active tags, which use batteries, passive tags draw their energy from the reader's electromagnetic signal, which activates the tag to transmit information.
Intelligent packaging does not interact with the food, but monitors the condition of the packaged product and provides information on food quality degradation using indicators (labels) and sensors. It enables traceability with unique codes and labels such as barcodes and RFID tags.
