Overview

ABSTRACT

The history of inorganic and hybrid organic-inorganic materials produced via the sol-gel process is marked by transient or lasting success. Despite the remarkable progress in research evidenced by the continuous growth of the literature in this domain, the difficulties met in obtaining reliable methods of synthesis and reproducible products have been the main obstacles to their industrialization. This was the case of materials based on monolithic blocks of xerogel, which were long neglected in favor of thin films and powders. They are now finding new life in the form of nanoporous and colorimetric sensors for the detection of air pollutants. Examples of xerogel-based sensors of formaldehyde and nitrogen trichloride are given here to illustrate the successful technology transfer from a CEA-CNRS laboratory to the start-up ETHERA.

 INTRODUCTION

Sol-gel materials are used in a wide range of applications, mainly in powder form or as thin film coatings. These include powders for chemical catalysts , in cosmetic and pharmaceutical formulations , as abrasive materials or as thermal insulation for the building industry. . Thin-film applications are numerous, particularly in the optical field, for ophthalmic coatings, coatings for glazing, optical fiber synthesis, and fluorescent sensors. . Other applications include corrosion protection coatings for metal parts, dielectric coatings and electrode coatings in electrochemistry. . Emerging fields include technical textiles...
