1.1 General principles

The aim of geological disposal is to ensure the protection of man and the environment from the risks posed by waste, ultimately in a passive manner over a very long period. This is achieved through a set of safety functions, based on the intrinsic characteristics of the host clay layer, the waste and the engineered components of the repository, without human intervention. Storage containers, like other components, contribute to this. Previously, during storage operation, these containers are strongly interfaced with the transfer systems up to the storage site, and also participate in the safety functions during operation.
