2. Wire ropes

2.1 Constitution

Wire ropes are made of cold-drawn steel wire. They are then assembled together to form strands, which are then committed to form a rope. Sling ropes are generally made of 6 strands of 36 or 37 wires, strung on textile or metal. These ropes are called "6 × 36" or "6 × 37". There are also "6 × 19" ropes with 6 strands of 19 wires, as well as ropes with 6 strands of 7 wires. Making ropes with fewer wires in the strands means using larger diameter wires, and the larger the wire, the more resistant it is to wear, while the rope is more rigid.
