1. Presentation of control and protection systems

The control and protection of a converter are carried out in several hierarchical layers, as shown in Figure 1 . Control functions enable the converter station to be controlled so that it responds to commands sent by the network operator, while protection functions monitor the status of the converter station to detect abnormal operation and take action before it causes significant damage to the equipment.
