Overview

ABSTRACT

The wireless ZigBee technology, after having proven its success, is still evolving. It has thus allowed for the emergence of new applications. It is involved in domains such as health, home automation or energy management. This technology, which is still subjected to the same standard, has opened itself to the Internet with its unique physical layer which remains its main asset. This article focuses on this standard and its evolution and also on protocols and other evolution paths of this wireless technology. It finally lists the various application fields via their certification and application environments.

 INTRODUCTION

After just a few years of existence, ZigBee technology continues to evolve, confirming its success in a variety of fields, including home automation, energy management, healthcare and industrial applications. Still based on the IEEE 802.15.4 standard, it has maintained a balance between standardization and proprietary developments, enabling it to respond favorably to a wide range of applications. This technology is even more promising when it is brought closer to the Internet with the 6LoWPAN project; new physical layers appear, enabling us to foresee more robust transmissions, higher data rates and even the possibility of locating mobile terminals.

This article gives a general overview of ZigBee and the world around it, from the technology's evolution to the now numerous application domains and related projects based on all or part of the ZigBee/ IEEE 802.15.4 standards.
