1. Measurement functions

Network metrology refers to the measurement of many aspects of network characteristics. As network complexity continues to increase, measuring network behavior has become essential to understanding how the network functions, and how successive protocols interact. Depending on the expected result, the nature of the measurements and the methods employed will be very different. This section presents the main fields of application for metrology, their differences and the consequences for the mechanisms to be implemented.
