2. Measurements to be taken

One of the most important aspects of metrology is knowing what you want to characterize, in order to choose the right metrics, models and architectures. The IETF and ITU define a set of relevant metrics for evaluating network parameters, from a deterministic point of view for the IETF, and from a probabilistic point of view for the ITU. A large number of metrics are standardized thanks to the IETF IPPM (IP Performance Metrics) group, including fundamental metrics :

  • connectivity ;

  • unidirectional or bidirectional measurement of delays or losses;

  • delay variation (also known as "jitter");

  • packet duplication.
