Overview

ABSTRACT

The flexibility of XML (eXtensible Mark-up Language) and its almost limitless expansion possibilities quickly resulted in its significant role in process modeling. This article will firstly discusses the various specifications of these XML processes, such as extraction, filtering and data transformation, security and authentication, transactions, administration, and also the interaction with the user. Subsequently, processes and business documents are described (UBL schemas, ebXML). The article concludes with the presentation of the prospects open-up by this rapidly evolving language since its standardization.

 INTRODUCTION

XML modeling is not confined to data alone. Since its standardization in early 1998, XML (see [H 7 148][H 3 500][H 3 502] ) has been adopted to model data processing itself. On the basis of these models, other more elaborate XML models have been built to complement the technical infrastructure of SOA architecture. Documents and business processes, the first fields of application of SOA (Services Oriented Architecture), are now systematically represented in XML. These representations call on specialized XML dialects, often implemented in the context of Web services infrastructure. (see "From XML to enterprise Web services" [H 2 910] ).
