3. XML structuring

XML (for eXtensible Markup Language) is a language for structuring textual information. The first version appeared in 1998, following the recommendations of the W3C's XML Core Working Group (see "Norms and standards" section), whose formatting is strongly inspired by SGML and HTML, as described above. XML version 1.1 (see section "Norms and standards") is the latest modification to this format, introduced in 2008. The main differences are the use of Unicode 4.0 characters, both in text (version 1.0) and in tags and attributes, as well as greater freedom over tag names. In what follows, we'll look at the structure of an XML document.
