Overview

ABSTRACT

CO2 originating from a significant industrial emission source is captured, purified and then compressed. It is then transported by ship or gas pipeline to a geological site suitable for storage (saline aquifer, former hydrocarbon reservoir or untapped coal veins). The current pilot projects are preparing for the industrial development scheduled for 2020. For the time being, the main objectives are to reduce the costs concerning the capture processes and ensure the sustainability as well as the security of the storage. A phase of communication and acceptance of this option by the general public is also required.

 INTRODUCTION

Summary

CO 2 from a major industrial emission source is captured, purified and then compressed. It is then transported by ship or pipeline to a suitable geological site for storage (saline aquifer, former hydrocarbon reservoir or untapped coal seams). Current pilot projects are paving the way for industrial deployment by 2020. For the time being, the main objectives are to reduce the cost of capture processes and to ensure the long-term viability and safety of storage. A phase of communication and acceptance of this option by the general public is also necessary.

Abstract

CO 2 emitted from a large-scale industrial source is captured, purified and then compressed. It is then transported by tanker or by pipeline to an adequate geological site for storage (former oil and gas reservoir, deep saline aquifer or unmined coal seams). Current pilot projects are preparing the industrial deployment scheduled for 2020. At present, the main objectives are to reduce the cost of the capture processes and to ensure durability as well as the safety of storage. A phase for communication and societal acceptance by the public will be necessary.
